180 years of Botanical Investigations in Antarctica and the Role of Brazil Acta Botanica
Câmara,Paulo E.A.S.; Carvalho-Silva,Micheline.
ABSTRACT Botany is one of the oldest sciences done above the 60oS parallel with more than 180 years passing since the first professional botanist collected plants in Antarctica. Far from being a barren place, plants constitute an important part of polar ecosystems. Brazil is one of only 29 countries in the world with consultative status and to currently develop botanical studies in Antarctica. We discuss the importance of polar science to Brazil and the role that Brazil has in the international austral-polar scientific community, as well as the importance of its newly inaugurated scientific station.

A catalog of Bryophyta types deposited at the National Museum of Brazil Acta Botanica
Câmara,Paulo E.A.S.; Carvalho-Silva,Micheline; Silva,Maria Sulamita Dias da; Peralta,Denilson Fernandes.
While visiting the Herbarium of the Botany Department of the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (code, R), we located the types of 219 bryophyte names, most of which were published by Karl Müller (cited as Müller Hallensis), whose holotypes were lost during the bombing of the Berlin Herbarium in 1943. A total of 181 names (82%) are possible candidates for lectotypification and most likely not to be found elsewhere. We also found the complete collection of Müller's "Bryologia Serrae Itatiaiae", made by Ernst Ule.

Morphology and development of leaf papillae in the Pilotrichaceae Acta Botanica
Duarte-Silva,Ana Gabriela; Carvalho-Silva,Micheline; Câmara,Paulo Eduardo Aguiar Saraiva.
Sporophyte morphology has been traditionally used in taxonomic studies of pleurocarpous mosses. However, the gametophyte morphology of the Pilotrichaceae still holds interesting and under-investigated characters. Here, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the morphology and development of Pilotrichaceae leaf papillae and assessed their usefulness in inferring the evolutionary history of the family. Specimens were observed under scanning electron microscopy, and we identified seven morphological types of papillae, as well as two different pathways of development. Our results suggest that papilla morphology and development are phylogenetically informative in the Pilotrichaceae.

Peperomia ciliato-caespitosa M. Carvalho-Silva & E.F. Guim.

Taxithelium juruense (Broth.) Broth. (Pylaisiadelphaceae) an endangered Brazilian endemic, with notes on the genus Taxithelium in Brazil Acta Botanica
Câmara,Paulo Eduardo Aguiar Saraiva; Carvalho-Silva,Micheline.
(Taxithelium juruense (Broth.) Broth. (Pylaisiadelphaceae) an endangered Brazilian endemic, with notes on the genus Taxithelium in Brazil). Since its original description, several collections of this species were reported in different states of Brazil. During a revision of the genus, it was confirmed that the geographic range of this species is restricted to the state of Acre, all other reports being based on misidentifications due mostly to the highly polymorphic nature of Taxithelium planum (Brid.) Mitt. Here, we present a more detailed study of T. juruense with characters that will help to distinguish it from T. planum. The misidentifications have obscured the real conservation status of this species, which should be endangered (EN). Key and...

The bryophytes of Trindade Island, South Atlantic, Brazil Acta Botanica
Faria,Allan Laid Alkimim; Carvalho-Silva,Micheline; Costa,Denise Pinheiro da; Câmara,Paulo Eduardo Aguiar Saraiva.
Trindade is a Brazilian oceanic island located about 1,200 Km east of the Brazilian coast (between 20º 31' 30" S, 29º 19' 30'' W). The island originated from the abissal zone about 3 million years ago, has a maximum altitude of 620 meters and an area of 9.28 Km². Even though the fanerogamic flora is known, there were virtually no data on the bryophyte flora. Four expeditions to the island were carried out during two years and approximately 431 specimens collected. This work presents the Bryoflora of this island, which comprises 32 species, including 20 species of liverworts distributed among six families; the most speciose being Lejeuneaceae with 11 species and Frullaniaceae with four. There are also 11 species of mosses distributed among eight families,...

The moss flora of Ostrov Geologov (Geologists Island), Maxwell Bay, King George Island, Antarctica Boletín de la Sociedad
Câmara,Paulo E.A.S; Guedes Costa Silva,Barbara; Carvalho-Silva,Micheline; Knop Henriques,Diego.
Located of the east coast of Fildes Peninsula, South of Ardley Island, at King George Island, Ostrov Geologov (Geologist Islands) is a small island with 0.25 miles long. It only had one plant record published so far. We have conducted extensive fieldwork on the site and provide here a comprehensive checklist and a key for the moss species occurring on the island. Despite its small size, theislandcontains about 35% of all theFildes Peninsula moss flora, six new records were found. The pristine state of the island due to its relative isolation, presence of avian nesting sites and a relatively rich moss flora are strong arguments in favor of protection status for the island.
